Coaching Managers
A firm of accountants
realised that before the business could be moved forwards, the partners and
managers needed to know where they were heading. Individual goals had to be
established and gaps in their skills identified. Individual coaching provided
the space and help that managers needed to work on their issues, before they
could work on the business. Regular coaching helped them define clear
objectives and then gave them the ongoing support and encouragement they needed
to achieve them. The business is now working towards a much clearer
future.

Selecting People
Managers within a large
telecommunications company were beginning to take more responsibility for
selecting their own teams. To do this effectively, they needed better HR
skills, in order to make fair selection decisions, based on evidence and free
from discrimination. Upturn Associates helped the managers learn new skills and
then practice them. Mistakes could be made during experiential training and
learnt from, through constructive feedback. The result is an effective
selection process that benefits the business, by ensuring the selection of
competent people.

Developing Strategy
When a manager is
promoted from a specialist role, to a more generalist, managerial role, the
need for improved planning skills is often highlighted. A large government
department found that many of its people needed help in acquiring new
competences prior to promotion. Upturn Associates has worked with over 200
people in the department in the last four years, supporting them in gaining the
skills they need, through training programmes. By connecting them with reality
and working with real plans and strategies, they can develop the planning
skills they need to lead and manage their businesses.

Leading and Working Together
Some businesses rely on
teams working together, which was definitely the case of the company that made
traditional timber framed buildings. For the business to grow, the managers
needed to learn to appraise their staff, while the staff needed to learn to be
appraised. The managers had to develop the ability to manage their teams, while
each team member had to be able to work within that team. Upturn Associates
worked with the entire business nearly 50 people, from one end of the
business to the other ensuring they could carry on working effectively
in their teams, to support the future of the business.
